When Apple can't absorb it, neither can your margins

Apple is raising prices. Tim Cook told the WSJ the memory shortage is a hundred-year flood he's never seen in 40 years, and that even Apple can no longer eat the cost of DRAM going to AI servers instead of consumer devices. For our FounderFamilia building anything with a chip in it, that's the tell: if the largest buyer on earth is passing costs to customers, the hardware startups downstream have less room than ever. 4% of 2024 funds have returned a dollar. Don't panic.

New Carta data making the rounds: of nearly 2,700 US venture funds, only 4% of 2024 vintages have returned even $1 of DPI to their LPs, versus 84% of 2017 funds. For our VCFamilia raising and reporting right now, two things matter more than that scary top-line number. One, venture is being modeled on a 15-year lifecycle now, not 10, so slow early distributions are the norm and not a verdict. Two, and this is the part to sit with, early DPI is basically uncorrelated to final DPI. A quiet first few years tells your LPs almost nothing about where the fund lands.
