VCFellow Feature 📸

This year, we launched our inaugural VCFamilia Fellowship, and just passed Phase 1! This cohort is filled with early-stage VCs with potential and equipping them with the tools, access, and community they need to stay competitive. Though they’ve been spending time learning from the best of the best, the best part of our community is learning from each other. So, we’ve started our Fellow Feature series where you get to hear about our Fellows’ journeys to VC, and advice for the next generation. First up - Bianca Corujo! For the full feature - read here.

When a startup founder with a rough pitch deck approached Bianca Corujo with an unconventional idea — raising red snapper using bioreactors — many VCs might have dismissed it. But Corujo saw potential. Eighteen months later, that same founder had raised $1.2 million, largely from Puerto Rican investors. It’s the kind of story that drives her work as Ventures Manager at parallel18, where the organization is not just investing in startups — they are investing in the island’s future.

“You get to support the founder from idea to investment,” Corujo explains. “We met every week to work on pitch practices, investor connections, everything — and he raised $1.2 million. It’s powerful to see that kind of traction coming out of Puerto Rico, especially with how early-stage the VC ecosystem still is here.”

An Island Approach to Venture Capital

What sets Corujo apart isn’t just where she invests — but how she thinks about value. While traditional VC focuses heavily on financial returns, she believes meaningful impact and solid returns can go hand in hand. Her perspective as a Puerto Rican adds an additional lens — one that considers how a startup’s growth can create ripple effects in its surrounding community, whether in Puerto Rico or beyond.

“Puerto Rico faces systemic challenges — from natural disasters to high poverty rates,” she says. “Entrepreneurship can help drive long-term change. A startup that grows here, creates job opportunities here, builds supply chains here, and contributes to GDP. That matters.”

At parallel18, a nonprofit innovation hub part of the Puerto Rico Science, Technology and Research Trust, Corujo manages the startup investment portfolio, including SAFE conversions, note repayments, and quarterly updates. She serves on the investment committee, shapes the Ventures curriculum, and leads VC education and coaching to help founders get investor-ready. She also builds and maintains a network of local and international investors to support startups beyond the program.

Latina Perspective, Global Impact

When asked how being a Latina shapes her work in VC, Corujo points to the importance of perspective.

“In one of my early venture courses, we learned that startups exist to solve problems — and to really understand a problem, you usually have to live it,” she says. “That’s why investor diversity matters. Different backgrounds help you see opportunities others miss.”

She adds, “If your investment team all looks and thinks the same, you’re going to miss entire markets.” [Full article on Medium here]

Our WhatsApp is a great space for our community to grow their companies and networks. These conversations that our fellows are having are just a taste of what our network has been doing. Last week, we had someone build their second cohort for an AI startup, promote their pitch competitions, and help one another with resources for startup funding. Join our WhatsApp communities here.
